Introduction
--Our Hike in the Adirondack Mountains--

What's the perfect addition to any honeymoon? That's right, backpacking.

Our first step in preparing for a hike in the Adirondacks was to buy and study the guidebook for the area: "Guide to Adirondack Trails, High Peaks Region" from the Adirondack Mountain Club. It provides in depth information about the region and includes a map for the High Peaks Region.

We studied the book, looking for a particular area that we would enjoy. Many people are interested in going to Mount Marcy, the highest peak in the Adirondacks, so the trails and areas surrounding Mount Marcy are often crowded in the summer.

The guidebook suggested that the area to the west of Mount Marcy was less traveled. We read further and found several places that attracted us to this region:
  • Wallface Mountain - the second highest vertical cliff in the eastern US
  • Scott and Wallface Ponds - two secluded ponds that are oddly perched on an arm of Wallface
  • Algonquin Peak - the second highest mountain in the Adirondacks, less crowded than Marcy and some say with a better view
  • Mount Colden - eleventh highest mountain in the Adirondacks, looms over Lake Colden showing its impressive slides
  • Avalanche Pass - a one mile long pass containing Avalanche Pond
So we started and ended our hike at the ADK Loj facilities, with four days of hiking in between. The map below shows the trails we traveled.
