After a good night of sleep we ate breakfast and packed up our camp. We would hike back to the ADK Loj. Just N of where we had camped the past two nights was Avalanche Pass. The vertical walls of Avalanche Mountain and Mount Colden rise out of a sliver of water. It is about one mile from the end of Avalanche Pond to the opposite end of the pass.
The rock literally rises out of the water at the S end of the pond, so walkways are bolted to the rock to allow passage for hikers. We were amused by the intense echoes created by a whistle directed at the wall opposite the pond as we hiked alongside the water.
After hiking for an hour and half we reached the north end of the pond. We met a family who were also hiking back to the Loj. We asked them to take a picture of us with the pond in the background. Here's the result.
Shortly after saying goodbye to Avalanche Pond we came upon a huge mass of fallen trees. A trail had literally been cut through the pile of trees. We later learned from a ranger that a mudslide occurred on Mount Colden a couple years ago and all these trees had been washed right off the mountain.
Another hour of hiking brought us to Marcy Pond and Marcy Dam. This is a very popular place because it is only a dayhike from the Loj and on the way to Mount Marcy. Subsequently, the Marcy Dam area has become a popular spot for bears too. The many camping areas and shelters mean free food to the bears. This picture is looking back at Algonquin Peak which can faintly be seen in the left-center of the picture.
Remember the picture of Aaron and the "Entering High Peaks Region" sign from day one? This is the analogue... not entering, but heading out. At this point the craving for pizza was nearly unbearable. Oh yeah, we smelled terrible too.
Here's a self taken picture after we arrived at the ADK parking lot. Didn't quite line it up right this time though. Where's the pizza?
Back in front of the ADK Loj. Another hiker took this picture for us from a distance. Four days of hiking in high humidity and heat tends to accelerate the aquisition of "hiker stink."
